The monument at Glenfinnan marks the sport where Prince Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, landed from France in 1745 and claimed Scotland and England with the aid of his loyal Jacobites. The tower, built by Alexander Macdonald in 1815, is topped with the statue of an unknown highlander, which is covered in lime and forest green moss, commemorating the raising of the standard.

If you have the endurance and stature to climb up the tiny winding stairs to the top of the monument, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains, Loch Seile and the Glenfinnan Viaduct which is featured in the Harry Potter films where the Jacobite Steam Train becomes the Hogwarts Express.

Glenfinnan is accessible by the A830 road between Fort William and Mallaig. There is a visitor centre across the road where you can buy tickets and souvenirs. When I was there in October it was very cold and very windy, so bring a sweater!
