La Salvaje or Barinatxe beach is a 750 m long beach located between the villages of Getxo and Sopelana and 17km northeast of Bilbao. It borders with the Cantabrian Sea which allows the beach to have spectacular cliffs around it. The green cliffs meet the blue sea there. From the cliffs. The ideal tourist destination for surf lovers or other sports such as climbing or hang gliding.
The location is ideal to enjoy a refreshing swim at its beaches, fly the skies on a light hang glider, or ride the waves on a surf board, and these activities are a common entertainment for the visitors.
The west side of the beach is nudist though you can wear your swimsuit. Here nudist and non nudist live together in harmony. There is golden sand for everyone. It’s funny to see people playing soccer/football in the morning. The way to differentiate the teams is that one doesn’t wear any clothes. No time for voyeurs. Here you don’t feel embarrassed when you meet someone nude. Once a year, a nude race is organised to welcome the summer. The news always shows this event in national TV. Of course, I’ve tried not to show anything for respect.
Anyway, the waves are wonderful though it’s quite dangerous and it’s usual to see the red flag. Then you can only take a bath on the shore. The rest of the beach is just for surfers.
