When we pulled up to the Staggering Ox restaurant/art gallery it was already a little late for supper, so we were good and hungry. We had crossed the Canada/U.S. border several hours ago, and the day had been long, and hot, and dry. I walked through the doors and immediately noticed that this place was a little unexpected – in an unassuming strip mall, but full of tasty smells and interesting sights. After a quick glance at the menu, I had it narrowed down to either the Three Mile Island, the Saddam Slammed, or the Yo’ Mama Osama. We were clearly well into a very patriotic sector of the U. S. of A.
The Saddam Slammed, I quickly discovered, listed camel spit as one of the ingredients – I was sold. The Staggering Ox, you see, specializes in sandwiches served in a ‘club foot’ loaf – a cylinder of bread, hollowed out – stuffed with fixin’s and stood on its end. Fascinating, and delicious.
To top off the lovely late supper – the location was also a gallery of sorts; there was art everywhere; on the walls, around the corners, and hanging from the ceiling. Something tells me that if a lomographer were to find him or herself living in Helena, Montana, the Staggering Ox would be a prime location for a new lomowall…
The sandwiches were creative and delicious, and the environment was interesting – we gave this road trip restaurant 12 thumbs up (that’s two from each of us).
