Plaza de Armas, Cusco
written by saidseni on September 10th, 2009 , 5 comments (3 votes)

Cusco is the historical capital of Peru. It used to be the center of the Inca empire who, is said, made the city with the shape of a puma and it’s main square in the sacred animal’s heart. This square was called ‘Huacaypata’ before the conquerors arrival.

After 1532, it became the Plaza de Armas when the Spanish took control of the city and built two churches at the square, La Catedral where stood before the Inca’s palace (many colonial buildings in the city were made above de foundations and walls of the incas) and La Compañia.

Nowadays, Cusco is a place where most tourists visiting Peru sleep a night or two and it has all the services you need. The city is located at the heart of the Andes, at 3.400 m. and it is beautiful. Plaza de Armas is fascinating, with it’s arcades and colonial architecture and the city coming down the hills as background. It is used for relaxing, meeting people and special events such as demonstrations (when I was there, there was a strike going on and people were demonstrating).

A great place to visit!! Did you drink some Cusceña there? Like most of the people (like you say) I stayed there a couple of nights before going to the Macchu Pichu! And in Peru the city of Arequipa (on the coast) is a great place to visit too! :))

Thanks for the comments! Vicuna, I'm not very into beer, the highlight for me is the tons of vegetarian restaurants with great food!
