After leaving the hotel at Tuxtla Gutierrez (capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas), we took a tour van which would drive us to this magical place. Greenish landscapes, rough roads and a lot of vegetation were around us. 40 kilometers later we arrived. Lots of yellow boats were waiting for us. Located near a city called Chiapa de Corzo, the Sumidero Canyon extends 30 kilometers over the Grijalva River.

This geological fault flows into the hydroelectric dam known as Chicoasén. If you stay alert, you might see crocodiles and exotic birds during about two hours of the boat tour. As long as you are entering the canyon, you begin to feel yourself smaller. It´s cliffs are over a kilometer above the river level. There is a legend that says the native people of the region wouldn´t want to be conquered so they made a massive suicide from the top of the canyon thinking they would be “free” after death. This canyon is so important that the silhouette that makes is actually the base of the Coat of Arms of the State of Chiapas and of course is one of the most important tourist attractions.
