Puraran Beach

Puraran Beach is one of the well known surfing spots in the Philippines and it is also popular among surfers from other parts of the world. The long-barrel waves, known as “The Majestics”, are what attracts surfers to this cove. The waves break on the coral reef about 200 meters from the shore. I went there with two friends to start a five-day island-hopping vacation.

Puraran Beach is located in the province of Catanduanes. You can fly from Manila to Virac and then take local transport (a bus or jeepney) to Baras, and from there you can hire a trimobile or tricycle to take you to Puraran Beach. When we went there on a weekend in August, there were only a few visitors around as it was not yet the peak of the surfing season.

At Elena’s Majestics Resort were we stayed, only 2 of the bamboo huts were occupied, including ours. It isn’t a tourist spot with night life and restaurants and luxury resorts. It’s a small beach and it’s very cheap to stay there. At Elena’s the food is cheap. The farm behind our hut was quite nice, too.

We spent the afternoon taking a dip in the warm water just near the shore and taking pictures. The water is quite calm there. We stayed only one night because we had to visit other islands, but that one night was very relaxing.

After dinner, my two friends and I sat at the lone rest hut in the beach in front of Elena’s drinking beer and enjoying each others company. We were not noisy. We were content to just look at the stars and enjoy the sound of the waves and feel the cool breeze.
