The Other Side of the Rhine (Düsseldorf)

The biggest part of Düsseldorf is located on the eastern side of the Rhine. Only a very small part of the city is on the western side. Within the city a total of seven bridges allow you to get from one side to the other, the two most interesting though are Rheinkniebrücke und Oberkasseler Brücke, which connect Oberkassel with the city center. Both bridges are close enough together to be within walking distance, you can cross both of them by foot, and from both of them you have a quite an impressive view of the skyline (especially when the sun goes down!).

Once you’re on the Oberkasseler side you’ve reached the Rhine meadows, which are basically a broad strip of green along the shore of the Rhine. The great thing is, while you can still see the buzzing action and city life just across the river, it all feels weirdly far away and detached. It’s great if you’re looking for a little time out without actually having to go far.

The area is quite popular, especially in summer, there’s always a lot of people going for walks, biking, skating, flying kites, sun-bathing, meeting friends… sometimes there’s also a flock of sheep.
For two weeks each July, the Rhine meadows are home of „the biggest fun fair at the Rhine“, but that’s another story!
