St Cuthberts Church

St Cuthberts is an old church on Peasholme Green on the way out of the City of York. I’ve passed this church many times on the bus on my journey to work, but due to relocation I no longer travel this route to work. So as I was walking to the the bus stop after running a few errands and a location in town I thought I should walk the 12 mile to the church and have a closer look at something I passed from a few hundred yards away! It certainly looked empty and recently disused with the gates hanging off and the size and condition of the trees within its small church yard. I Presumed for security the church would be locked and that it was.
To the left of the church was an alley way which leads to other buildings at the rear and a this first caught my eye as it appeared to go nowhere! Next to this entrance there was a carving in York stone of a boy and a girl. This was placed in memory of the children of the grey and red coat orphanages that previously occupied the surrounding sites. For me this holds great personal importance as my grandmothers brothers were placed into grey coat orphanage when their mother died following the birth of my grandmother. She however was adopted by her at who refused to take on her elder brothers. (But this is another story)
Luckily for me the rain was intermittent by the time I got to this location and unfortunately I was still damp and soaked to through ☹ there was recent disturbance in the ground between graves, where the remnants of the tree’s which had recently been removed from between the gravestones.
This at first I thought would impede my shots within the church yard, but it just meant that I had to think my shots more carefully, than just shooting to be able to incorporate them into the shots. The fresh cuts of the wood, the years of rings within the centre of the rough bark and the dilapidated graves contrast each other with the old and the new, although all are representations of death of the tree and those buried in the graves.
