The Maize Maze

A sunny Saturday afternoon and a spur of the moment trip to the Maize Maze on Elvington Lane in York. A 3mile journey from home, and although the maze has been running every year for the past 7+years I’ve never actually been. (shame on me!) I guess this is what happens when you don’t appreciate what is exactly on your doorstep! Myself and my friend Lindsay donned comfortable footwear and jumped in the car (if slightly hungover) to drive the few miles to the maize maze.

For those of you who don’t know, a Maize maze is a maze that is marked within a large field of the crop. Due to the crops growing incredibly high this is ideal. Spacious paths mapped out the shape of a spaceman this year to mark the anniversary of the Moon landings.

We arrived and the car park was totally heaving, but we managed to get a space in the first row! Lucky me!! We paid our £8 each to get in (cheaper than I expected) turned down the offer of a map for an extra £1.50 and wandered across to the maze. The aim is to make your way through the maze and call at each of the 6 checkpoints where you get the answer to the previous checkpoints question, and a question for the next checkpoint (numbered 1-6) Once you have collected the answers, these can be entered into a prize trip to new york (I hope I win!!) So Lindsay and I ventured into the maze, aiming for checkpoint one. 15minutes later we had returned to the entrance for a 4th time! Oh dear!!! 2Women+Navigation=Fail

We headed back into the maize for the 5th time and managed to make our way to the 1st checkpoint, SO PROUD and CHUFFED! Following this we found the central open area in the maze, purchased a map, bottle of water and an ice-cream before setting off back into the maze again with the map for reference (it comes with a cute little compass) Don’t forget to check out the viewing towers (so you can see where you are heading – not that it helps your navigation!) Just enjoy yourself :) we certainly did – I even got a bit of a suntan in the great British sunshine!!
