Necropolis Cristobal Colon

A cemetery & open-air museum in marble and stone. There are many impressive monuments, statues and mausoleums of rich and famous Cubans.

This is a mini-city in marble & stone. It has layout like a real city with streets and squares on a rectangular grid. It was found in 1868 and until today there are graves of more a million people. There are many impressive monuments, statues and mausoleums of rich and famous Cubans.

If you ever thought about Heaven or Ideal City, so it’s definitely how it should look like. It’s mini city in stone, marble and granite with rectangular grid layout, streets, squares and avenues. As in a real city there are names of the streets, squares and lanes, districts, for people of different professions, social status and origins. It’s also a fantastic open-air sculpture museum. Many of the graves have massive decoration and unique design – a pyramid, a Gothic chapel, byzantine basilica, etc. This is also a great place for getting familiar with Cuban history, because lots of famous Cubans rest here.

You can enter through the massive neo-Romanesque gateway from Calzada de Zapata street – this is the main entrance to the cemetery. Here you can by a detailed map and check fantastic vintage funeral car, then by main main avenue you can reach central, perfectly rounded square with Capilla Central on it. It is beautiful church, which look very similar to the one from Raphael’s painting.

It’s also a quiet, clean and peaceful place, which can be a great place to escape from noisy street life of Havana city, spend here at least half of a day and take great photos.
