Vitoria Gazteiz Jazz Festival - Free Concerts Everywhere
written by disdis on August 7th, 2009 , 2 comments (2 votes)

Every year, from 12 to 18th of July, Vitoria turns into a jazz city. Lots of classic and moder jazz bands come for all over the world to take part in this 33 years old festival. The calm city changes completely, and people dance on the streets. Many bars and terraces are improvised stages of the musicians. This year the opening concert was played by Jazzanova, a german collective of jazz producers and DJ’s. This was the first time in Spain playing live and it was for free. Their smooth music made us dance and drink a lot that night. This year’s poster was made in collaboration with famous TV showman Andreu Buenafuente and designer and San fermine’s kukuxumusu designs Mikel Urmeneta. You can check the poster here (http://www.jazzvitoria.com/cartel.html).

After the Jazzanova concert we went to my favorite pub, the Dublin. There I met the musicians and got some CDs signed. One of my friends wanted them to write “To Belén with love”. Maybe they didn’t understand me or maybe they were also drunk but they signed also the LP with the same sentence.

The best thing of this festival is that most part of the concerts are for free. And you can see concerts in every square in the city. It takes less than 5 minutes to go form one stage to another. And it’s not overcrowded. You can see the concerts standing 5 meters away from the stage. The main spots are Café Dublin, Monterhermoso and NH Hotel. If you want to play (a lot of money) then you have to go to the Mendizorrotza sports center where the most famous and classic musicians play but it’s more like a social event than music. I prefer staying on the street and having fun while I drink a beer.
