The ruins of a castle on the edge of Wakefield.
Sandal Castle is rumored to have been built around 1240, it currently stands in rack and ruin, with only the visitor centre being in a good state. You can walk to the top of the castle and from this vantage point it gives spectacular views of pugneys country park and the river calder and is a great place to watch the sun set.
What makes Sandal Castle particularly interesting is that it was the location of the battle of Wakefield, possibly the most exciting thing to ever happen there. Anyway, it’s a good place for a wander or a pleasant afternoon with the family, with the visitor centre having attractions that the young ones would enjoy.
