Café Uno & Grandpa's Inn

Great meals, antique furniture and a place to rest your head.

After being up all night and shooting all day I retreated to the comfort of my hotel. I was nursing a migraine and some back strain. I hadn’t eaten lunch yet, so after taking a nap I crawled down the hotel staircase and found two options. Grandpa’s Café and Café Uno.

Ask any Bigueño (person from Vigan) a good place to stay or have a night cap the name Grandpa’s Inn would likely pop up. I opted for café Uno and just took in the old world ambiance. I ordered some Crispy Bagnet and mountain rice but forgot to photograph it before gobbling up the whole thing savoring the crispy pork rind on top and deep fried meat. The crunch rocked my brain and the probably surged up my cholesterol levels. But it was absolutely worth it. Café Uno also specializes in cakes and pastries, and their pastas have constantly stirred up buzz from tourist who try the place out.

Grandpa’s Inn used to be an ancestral home until it was converted into a B&B. It’s one of the cheapest in terms of rates but there is no shortage of class nor quality of service in this quaint place. I have nothing but good words for this place as they were attentive to all guests and visitors and even encouraged me to take photos of their interiors. Later that day, after having my fill of night shots of the city I walked into my room and noticed that right outside my window was the Uno Grill which was also owned by the same family as the Hotel and the Café. Uno Grill is a bar that also served most of what the two other places had and then some. Here you’d find traditional pulutan or food that goes well while drinking like tapa iloko, bagnet, Poqui-poqui balls which is a famous dish made of roasted eggplant, onions tomatoes and eggs., The delicious aroma coming off the place was just as inviting as the acoustics that I could hear when I switched off my TV. But alas I was aching for some more rest and I just let the calming folk-rock music lull me to sleep.
