P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is in the heart of Long Island City, Queens, the most diverse borough of New York City. With a focus on contemporary (read: living) artists, P.S.1 pushes the boundaries of modern art with the accessibility of its sister organization, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Five dollars or a ticket from MoMA purchased thirty days before the date grants you access to this gem of a space. There are usually four or five rotating exhibits along with the “permanent collection” — that is to say, pieces that have converted the school into a museum. Dull staircases become works of painted art, while lighting fixtures become sculpture. You can see the workings of an old school, from the gallery spaces of converted classrooms, to a cafeteria that still serves lunch to this day.
Every summer the space holds a summer concert series that is tied along with an architectural design competition. Whoever wins the competition gets to build on the concert site, constructing with quick deadlines and lots of imagination.
It’s quiet and not crowded, and very affordable. To check out great art at a bargain, come check out P.S.1!
