Monte Kaolino

It all started in 1901 when „Amberger Kaolinwerke“ started mining Kaolin for porcelain and paper production. As quartz sand was a waste-product in this process it was dumped besides the mining area where it grew to a large mountain. In 1995 it stopped growing because of new economical possibilities for quartz sand.

So let`s get you back in sports-history: In the early 50ties one man decided that he wants to ski not only in winter also he wanted to realize his hobby in summertime. So he packed his old wooden skis on his bike and went there to draw the first lines into the sand in complete loneliness. But as always, some kids kept an eye on this man and soon there was a scene growing. In 1956 a skiing club has been established and till today Monte Kaolino has been grown to a huge attraction. A skilift has been built which allows you to get on top in a few minutes. But I recommend to go up old school because:

  • it is a natural soft peeling for your feet
  • only then you know how hard it must have been for the skiing-pioneers in the beginning
*it is so much fun on your way back downwards trying to run down or even jump, sit down, just relax and enjoy the view

Close to the mountain there is a camping area, an open air pool, a high ropes course and the newest one: a summer toboggan run. In the early 90ies the first snowboarders entered Monte Kaolino and soon the first sand boarding world championships took place. Today there are not that much snow/sand boarders anymore, there were more skiers and some kids with modified skateboards.
