Marseille's "Vieux Port" and FIsh Market
written by vicuna on June 11th, 2009 , 5 comments (7 votes)

Marseille was founded in the year 600 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea and they found this place as being the perfect harbor to develop a trade activity and have a lot of natural sea resources to live from. It’s the origins of the old port and of the city of Marseille.

Today it’s still the main center of the city and there’s a famous fish market in the morning. Marseille has a very famous fish specialty, the “Bouillabaisse”, kind of fish soup but with the whole fish in it, and many different species you can find in the area. It’s really delicious, but the most important to make this recipe is to buy the fresh fish directly at the fish market of Marseille.

Go there early in the morning (the market takes place every day), it’s the best moment to discover it, and open all your senses! Your nose will be surrounded by a very strong and particular fish smell, mixed with the smell of the salted sea, it’s very special… then your ears will be touched by all the shouting of the fishers, selling their products and telling you that their fish is the best and freshest one… then your eyes will see all the crowd around the sellers and you will see so many different and fascinating fishes, all fresh from the morning and all coming in the “Bouillabaisse”… and a the end, and as the people of Marseille like to talk, use your mouth and ask them about the fishes, the recipe of the bouillabaisse, their fisher activity or anything else!

They’re always ready to talk to you and tell you some fantastic story about fishing and the city of Marseille! Visit this market is really an “all senses” visit, it’s really worth of it! :)) To go there, just direction “Vieux Port” (unmissable) and follow the fish-smell…

I love how you started the gallery in b/w and then brought in the color. It felt as though one was traveling through time... Etonnant!
