Once, Yanaka was a prosperous “Teramachi” or temple town who’s residents worked at the temples. There is a wall left in the ruins of the temple to be transmitted through for a long time in this neighborhood. The wall was made more than 200 years ago.
It was broken by earthquakes, fires and wars many times in old days, but has a figure same as old days while repeating restoration. Yanaka also has a shopping street where people gather. It’s often said that Tokyo’s Shitamachi shopping streets are made specifically as a place for people to gather. This shopping street is distinct in that it’s a regular gathering place for street cats. All along this shopping street you can see different cat motifs, and there is even a little game you can play trying to find all the lifelike cat figures along the street – it’s not as easy as it sounds.
