It´s a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki, which is the capital of the region of Macedonia and the second biggest city in Greece. This tower has seen a lot over the years. Build around 1430 by Sultan Murad II and his Ottomans was used as a fort, garrison and a prison. In 1826 there was a big massacre of the prisoners in the tower and his name changed from the White Tower in “The Tower of Blood”.
In 1912, the tower was whitewashed as a symbol of cleansing and acquired his present name again. During the Worldwar 2, the tower was used to store food for the German soldiers. As I said, these walls saw a lot of things in the past but now it becomes one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Thessaloniki. It also houses a Byzantine museum and is one of the Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
Around the tower there is a lot of stuff going on. A lot of tourists and teenagers use it as a hangout spot…..you can see skateboarders doing their Kick flips and Heelies under the statue of Alexander the Great and you can start trips into the Aegean Sea from there…. It´s definitely worth to check it, get some ice cream or one of the famous Greek coffee specialties and enjoy the sun…
