A well organized swap of rubbish for cash, and a weekly stop before a trip to the coffee shop.
In the city where I live, beverage containers are not garbage. Drink cans, bottles, and boxes are worth at least 10 cents if you return them to a ‘bottle depot’. There are many independently owned depots in the city, but the Beverly Bottle Depot is my favorite. My 5 year old son and I make a weekly trip with all of the containers that we have saved up or found on our walks during the week. We dump our bags of ‘empties’ in a waist level tray that measures about 1 metre by 2 meters and wait for the staff to sort and count them. Soon we are walking out with a few bills and some change – sometimes with a quick stop at the bubble gum machine on the way out – and on our way to the neighbourhood coffee shop to buy some treats!
