Croft Car Boot Sale

A place to see life... and pick up cheap cameras!

Many lomographers will know that a great place to rescue unwanted and unloved film cameras is a flea market or a garage sale. In the UK we have the institution known as the ‘car boot sale’.

Taking place all across the country, early on Sunday mornings, seller s drive to a field, park up, and set out all the junk from their houses and garages in the hope of making some money from the junk they would ordinarily discard. But really, the only people making money are the farmers who charge for the use of their fields!

One of the biggest in the central region of England is in a village called Croft in Leicestershire, about two mile from my Mother’s house. It regularly attracts hundreds of ‘booters’ and thousand of prospective purchasers.

You meet all sorts of people at this event – very enjoyable for the lomographer who loves to record human life. I’m generally too shy to take pictures of strangers, but one morning I steeled myself and took the plunge. Not only was I rewarded with some good shots, but I also managed to pick up five cameras to add to my collection…

I got (deep breath) A Polaroid 600, an Ilford Sportsman, a Contina (these two thrown in free with the Poly), a Cosmic Symbol, and a Smena 8M! Couldn't believe my luck!
