Vejer de la Frontera is a very pretty, walled, white town seeped in history in Andalusia, Spain.
Vejer de la Frontera is an ancient walled white town, or Pueblo Blanco, perched on a hilltop in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, on the right bank of the river Barbate. It overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar and surrounded by orchards, wind farms and orange groves with fantastic views from many points of the old town.
Wander the ancient streets never designed for cars and it almost feels like you’ve stepped back in time…until you get mown down by some locals on mopeds of course!
It contains several ancient churches and convents, and the architecture of many of its houses recalls the period of Moorish rule, which lasted from 711 until the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile in 1248. It was one of the last towns in Moorish rule, with a statue representing how women dressed until as recently as the 1970s, dressed entirely in black robes with only one eye allowed to be shown.
There are plenty of little shops, including a very good little leather shop, and not just cow leather either, and plenty of bars and cafes, many making the most of the spectacular views! If you’re visiting Andalucia it’s worth visiting one of the several Pueblo Blanco towns.
