Viana do Castelo is an Atlantic City in the North of Portugal close to Porto (more a less 70Km). It is located between three natural elements: the Atlantic Ocean, a river (Rio Lima) and a Mountain. It is a medium size city (according to Portugal’s standards) with a nice city center that is 750 years old. One of the most important things about the development of the city is the seaport and the naval repairing facilities. The shipyard is the only one still working in Portugal.
Now the city finished a program about rebuilding the public zones of the city center, so it can be good place to see Architecture (some buildings from the best Portuguese architects).
For me it can be a nice place to spend some days, the beach is quite near and is well known for the quality and for the waves for Bodyboard/Surfing and wind for Kite/Wind surfing. The only disadvantage is that the water is cold here. In the summer (August) there are some popular parties and music festivals in the district. And don’t forget to try “Bolas de Berlim do Manel Natário” (the best Berliners ever!)
