Usually the annual pillow fight in New York City takes place in the middle of Union Square, but extenuating circumstances and political activism drove this year’s pillow fight right into the heart of Wall Street, just in front of the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Building in Lower Manhattan.
Now just imagine a crowd of over 5000 people armed with feather-stuffed pillows hitting each other for over two hours. New Yorkers have to de-stress, after all, and what better way than by indirectly punching someone in the face with a soft fluffy pillow?
A bleedover crowd of spectators and second-rounders upped the crowd to over 6000, one of the larger crowds to descend on the Financial District on any given day.
The cops ended up breaking up the fight in front of Federal Hall, in which case a few other pillow fights ended up breaking out on other corners of the city. One of the bigger fights ended up in South Street Seaport, leaving a trail of pillow parts and fluff that, despite volunteer cleanup efforts, would not go away, thanks in part to a windy day and tons of feathers.
The pillow fight celebrates its fifth anniversary next year… Will you be there?
