London Southbank and The Thames Festival

If you don’t like crowds this is one time to steer clear of the Southbank, It’s bursting shoulder to shoulder with everyone.

Cultural events take many shapes and forms but this is great for trying many new foods, chilling to some amazingly diverse music and talking to people from all over the place. Usually stages of various sizes are set up in whatever space can be found. These could be for performers, musicians demonstrators of different techniques, plays etc, they can be found all the way along the Southbank. A lot of them are set around the Gabriels Wharf and the Television Centre area.

A blend of music passes over you as you walk along along with the shouts of the street sellers and the smells of exotic foods waft up to you in a heady mix.

Another great place to stop is the National Theatre, especially if it has it’s fake garden out the front, where you can relax with a drink and meet friends in an unusual setting. The more adventurous or energetic can head straight for the Skateboarders area and watch photograph or join in, either with the skaters or the graffiti artists.

If the tide is out don’t forget to look down onto the beach a surprise is the sand sculpture building that goes on in front of Gabriels Wharf, this is also a great place to go mud larking, you’ll be guaranteed to find some old clay pipes or oyster shells at the very least. If music is more for you then often there is a beach party set up further down near the Festival Hall.

Book lovers must not forget to check out the bargains under Waterloo Bridge, sometimes there are treasures to be had. Don’t forget to keep your eyes open for very weird sights, this place is full of them!
