Templo de Santiago de Tupátaro

This pretty sixteenth century church is a great place to go, see, and shoot.

The temple of Santiago of Tupátaro is a little church located in the little town of Tupátaro in the state of Michoacán, about half an hour from the capital city Morelia.

This beautiful church with its eighteenth century decoration is a fantastic place to go. Inside, the wooden ceiling (which is a very important artistic and historic monument) is decorated with very old paintings of archangels made by local people, it is very awesome; the golden altar is decorated with avocados and pomegranates, representing the union of Spanish and Mexican people, there are also these birds (I think they’re called herons) pinching their breasts that represent sacrifice.

On the floor there are lots and lots of graves, you can’t see any names but it is divided into some sort of little boxes. Unfortunately it is forbidden to take photos inside but if you are nice and look very eager to do so (or don’t ask for permission and just go for it) you may be able to take some pictures inside.

Although it’s forbidden to take pictures inside, there is no problem if you take pictures outside, in the garden where you’ll find many interesting things. There are several graves and flowers, there’s a giant stone cross, the church and several trees, there’s even a tree coming out of a tree.

Outside you’ll find a the little town’s plaza and some places where you can buy some food. If you’re around, it’s a great place to visit (and shoot)

PS the Tupátaro marked in the map IS NOT the Tupátaro I’m talking about, the tupátaro I’m talking about is located between Morelia and Patzcuaro, SouthWest(ish) of Morelia, close to another town called Cuanajo.
