Tiznit, Morocco

Some images from the town of Tiznit and nearby Aglou. Tiznit is a beautiful walled town about an hour's drive south of Agadir on the N1 road. I took a shared taxi all the way which worked out really cheap.

Tiznit is a beautiful walled town about an hour’s drive south of Agadir on the N1 road. I took a shared taxi all the way which worked out really cheap. Tiznit is a kind of crossroads town between the arable Souss region and the Sahara and is famous for it’s handcrafted silver Berber jewelery (which always comes duller than the silver we are used to – to me a good thing as, like much of Morocco, this adds an air of hidden mystery to it).

The air in the town smelled fresh and was without some of the humidity further north, closer ot the Atlantic. The open square on arrival inside the town walls was buzzing with life, Saturday morning souk preparations and a crazy, friendly local guy with one tooth made people laugh with his quick jokes. The medina is worth a visit (take a guide or someone who knows their way around or you’ll get lost) but be aware it’s a very private place, another time even, and one that deserves a lot of respect. I grabbed another shared taxi out to the beach ‘resort’ of Aglou, about 10km from Tiznit.

Like a forgotten seaside town of the 70s, with faded blue and white architecture and the wildest waves around. You can pick up thyme on the street for a dhiram or two. Listen to finches singing from the walls of Tiznit. Buy exquisite filigree jewelery. Or, like me, just sit and drink coffee and watch and absorb.
