Konstanz and Lake Constance

I took the train from Frankfurt to Konstanz, arriving on late Friday afternoon. But before we entered the boat on Saturday my friend showed me what Konstanz had to offer culturally. First was a visit to the German-Swiss border, which divides the towns Konstanz in Germany and Kreuzlingen in Switzerland. Here the border passes through streets and in between houses and nowadays consists of sculptures (so called “Kunstgrenze” = art border) instead of a fence. To avoid illegal activity there are security cameras of course.

The Kunstgrenze is lots of fun because you can literally jump from Switzerland to Germany and back or walk along it, one leg in Switzerland and the other in Germany. Be prepared to traumatize the automatic provider search of your cell phone.
Later we checked out the Konstanz night life and went to bed relatively late. There’s nothing like going on a sailing trip with a hang-over.

The next morning was sunny but cold. Packed in warm clothes we used the good wind to “fly” across the lake, always enjoying the spectacular panorama of the Alps in the background and the many sailing ships and ferries that were passing us. Around 1 pm Friedrichshafen lured us with a multicultural culinary market and in the late afternoon we were sailing back to Konstanz with a personal speed record and a phenomenal heeling. We were especially excited when we realized in the evening that we were sailing a distance of more than 60 km that day. The day found its perfect ending in a get-together at the ice creme parlor. Unfortunately the next day I had to return to Frankfurt. But hopefully I’ll be able to go on another sailing trip on Lake Constance this summer.
