The Bulldog International 5 stars Hostel

Located in the middle of the Red Quarter, the Bulldog is one of Amsterdam’s most famous Institutions: it was one of the first coffee shop in town and one of the first hostel.

Back in 2007 I went to Amsterdam on a “blind date”. Oh, no!, nothing to do with sex, drugs and rock’n’roll… A few months before I had met a guy on Myspace: he was living in the UK and wanted to learn French. I was French and happy to help him perfect his knowledge of my mother tongue.

We were also sharing our passion for photography. On the 31st of December 2006 we were both alone, having our daily IM-ing session, writing each other our depressive thoughts about the weather and our immediate environment, when we were both moved by a crazy wish for adventure, and allured by Easyjet season’s promotions, we decided to meet in Amsterdam for the weekend of Easter…

It was our first time in Amsterdam, as well as our first meeting, and we had to find an accommodation. We wanted something cheap, not far from the Centraal Station, in the middle of everything and a bit out of the ordinary, where we could spend 2 nights together… and in case one of us would appear as being a psycho, from where we could runaway without thinking about any economical loss….

Browsing the Internet I found the Bulldog International 5 stars Hostel! Located in the middle of the Red Quarter, the Bulldog is one of Amsterdam’s most famous Institutions: it was one of the first coffee shop in town and one of the first hostel. For a long time the favorite place for backpackers, it has been in the past years fully renovated and offers now much more comfort: no more sawdust on the floor, the whole place is quite clean, somehow cozy and nicely designed. If you don’t like sleeping in a dormitory, you can book a private room (with a private clean bathroom), which we did.

We both had a great sleep, though the room smelled weird (we found out that we were staying above the kitchen where they were cooking their famous fried mashed herrings dumplings… yuuuuk, but we survived…). The place is pretty safe as there is a safety guard at the entrance and only guests are allowed in the hotel area (but I’m not too sure if anyone would survive in case of fire…). There is a 24hr lounge downstairs that is a nice place for after-hours, with a bar, pool tables, TV and a few Internet PCs to check your emails. The breakfast is simple: it’s just a buffet of bread rolls, ham, cheese, coffee, juice, cereal and boiled eggs. I only tried the coffee and it was acceptable.

I really recommend this place for its location, price and atmosphere, even if you are not a smoker, and if you are looking for something original (note: no child allowed: you must be 18 to book a room there).

Cool gallery and hotel ! N°15 really attracted my eye... Congrats... Oh, and it made me think about the "Carlton arms" in New-York... I wish I could go back there to make a location... Anyway, Bravo grenoouille !

Thank you guys! wow I'm not sure Eggleston would appreciate the comparison... no, really these shots are crap, but the place was worth a location for lomo backpackers... so, forgive me for these miserable pics...
