S. Bento Station was inaugurated in 1916, and it was design by the famous architect José Marques da Silva. Before this train station was build there was a Benedictine monastery named São Bento de Avé-Maria. The Monastery was destroyed and then was constructed in the beginning of the XX century the station but the name remains “S.bento”.
One of the most significant aspect of this station is the artwork the tile panels all over the station, painted by the famous painter Jorge Colaço, their you can see important moment of railroad and Portugal history.
It’s actually one of the best ways to get into city. You are at 10 minutes walking from most of historical places in Oporto such as “Avenida dos Aliados”:http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2009/02/16/avenida-dos-aliados, “Clérigos Tower”:http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2008/07/28/tower-of-the-clrigos-church, “Ribeira”:http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2009/01/05/douro-river (UNESCO heritage), “Palácio de cristal’s gardens”:"http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2008/09/02/palcio-de-cristals-gardens:http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2008/09/02/palcio-de-cristals-gardens, Town hall and Santa Catarina Street.
