Philippine Science Centrum: Science taught the fun way

On a whim, I decided to visit a favorite primary school destination when I was a kid, the Philippine Science Centrum. From it’s original location in Manila, the whole museum was moved to Marikina City which is regarded as the cleanest city & greenest in the country and home of the world’s largest pair of shoes.

Science Centrum was first established 28 years ago to foster appreciation and love for science in a fun and engaging way. It boasts of more than a hundred interactive exhibits and 9 galleries divided according to which branch of science they belong to such as, Earth Science, the Human Body, Electricity & Magnetism and so on. I had so much fun with the exhibit, I forgot to take more pictures and almost left my LC-A in one of the displays! Good thing the kind hearted staff handed it back to me, they have a lot of nice museum guides because typically their clientele are made of bus loads of children that must be minded and accompanied most of the time. I probably reverted to child mode and started to tinker with the displays not minding where I left my camera.

So what will you find in Science Centrum? Most of the exhibits are literally two hand tasks. You can place your hand on a huge metal ball and a current will fill the room making your hair stand on end. It’s especially entertaining if you have long hair as you really see it go up. You’ll also find displays that activate light shows that allow you to leave an imprint of your shadow on the wall.There’s a biking skeleton which emulates you movement while on a stationary bike, various optical illusions that will make you seem like you are floating.Displays that demonstrate how whirlpools and tornadoes are formed. But my favorite exhibit was the inclined house where you could enter the room and do Jacko’s moon walker bend with no problems as the tilted floorboard was placed at an angle where walking straight meant walking up. Tickets cost about two dollars. The Philippine Science Centrum is located at the River Banks Mall a popular destination for bargain hunters. There are loads of places to eat after a tiring walk through the galleries. Right across the mall is the famed Marikina River where you might just be able to catch a concert or two if you’ve got your lucky shoes on.
