At the top of the Sintra range there's a palace from the XIX century, made by a German prince that married the queen of Portugal at the time, D. Maria II. He bought the ruins of an old monastery, from which you can still visit the cloister and the chapel, rebuild it and adapted into the royal's family summer palace. He built a new part, full of symbols from Portuguese history and myths, like the Triton.

The style of this fantasy palace is often described as romantic and combines elements of the Portuguese style “manuelino”, Islamic elements and more.
Around the palace, the prince and his second wife, an opera singer with who he married after the queens death, planted a beautiful and exotic park, a marvelous place to wonder at spring time and summer.
The palace stands in one of the most breathtaking places around Lisbon, the Sintra range, from where you can see (if the weather is nice…) the river Tagus flowing into the Atlantic ocean. The villages Sintra and São Pedro are very beautiful and worth a visit.
