Old Ballarat Train Station

The Ballarat Train Station is a two-minute walk from the city center in Ballarat. Despite that new fast trains have been installed, the structure of the station remains the same as it was in the 1860’s. It is also the spot where I went to the first Ballarat Lomographer’s meet up! That was a spectacular evening involving Holga’s, tripods, light meters, the golden hour of light, and lengthy discussions about photography.
The station is mainly used today by commuters who live in Ballarat but travel to Melbourne every day for work. One of my brothers did this for over a year, the trip is just over an hour if you catch a “fast” train. It terminates at Southern Cross station in Melbourne.
Due to the current economical climate of recent months, the popularity of the trains has increased enormously because it is cheaper and faster than taking a car to Melbourne. Most trips are packed out, so the government is planning to throw some money at V-line to put in more carriages.
Altogether, this train station is unique, old, beautiful, and houses a lot of good memories, from lomo-ing on with a new buddy to the buzzing excitement that precedes a school excursion to the City for the day.
