Coimbra is nationally known as the city of students, because the university is the oldest one in Europe and is attended to by people from all over the country and from different parts of the world. Bathed by the Mondego river, it is a really beautiful town with a lot to explore.

The best place to absorb the beauty of Coimbra is A Baixa – downtown. Walking through the Almedina Arch you can hear the typical Fado of Coimbra playing from inside a souvenir shop, where you can find from magnettes to paintings of the classic view from the bridge that crosses the Mondego to the University’s tower, and the bell called A Cabra – which means “goat”, but would be more strictly translated as “bitch” since it was called that way for ringing at the time students were supposed to go home, and they did not like it very much…

Since it is a student’s town, around the university area you can see many messages written on walls, most of them revolutionary – the academic association of Coimbra is well known for making a political stand whenever they found something was not fair towards the Portuguese people and themselves as students. Coimbra is known in Portugal by young people because of it’s academical traditions and parties; two weeks per year – one in the beginning of the first semester, to welcome the first-graders, called Caloiros – Latada – and another one in the middle of the second semester, Queima das Fitas, when all people from every courses parade down the city. Both weeks consist of daily concerts in a big stage by the river that last until the morning of the next day.

Walking down from the university to the more modern and populated part of Coimbra, you pass by the Botanic Garden – a beautiful, beautiful place, great for taking pictures in a sunny day! with many benches and all kinds of plants, emanating all kinds of smells, it’s a great place to go for a walk.

The most modern part of town is more or less like any other town – buildings, not all pretty, not all well planned, the occasional garden or park, malls, schools, the stadium… It is a very cool, not-that-big city that passers-by should definitively explore!
