A small town on the Preguica River (Laziness River), its riverside setting and sandy patches gives it a charm of its own. Five buses a day run from São Luís, last one at 6:30 PM, 4 hours, 25 R$. Barreirinhas is a dusty town, it has a main street and a few dirt roads and lots of mango trees .
Jumping-off point for tours of the National Park (Lençóis Maranhenses – check my lomolocation http://beta.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2008/12/27/lencois-maranhenses-stranger-than-paradise) and for boat trips down river. The road to Lençóis is a mix of deep sand, windy turns, going through water and a lot of bouncing. The river runs through the area and at the end for a ½ mile or so only a sand bar divides the ocean and river. The waves are insane, they are so frequent with a strong current. Even I did not go out very far, I enjoyed a lot.
We were in the middle of election campaign. All houses support its own mayor candidate with a mural painting. Cars, truck, bicycles, everything has its sound system which plays loudly always the same song. All the candidates have a song (13 Miltinho – milton dias rocha filho, 12 Leo Costa – arieldes macario da costa, 15 Alberico – albérico de frança ferreira filho) and at the end of the day for sure you are singing one of those. It’s like a brainwashing, a pneumatic drill and the funny thing it was that the election was three months later. I remember that I liked miltinho’s song it was very cheerful and good for dancing but when I came back home I discovered that dr. miltinho was accused of buying votes. The best song doesn’t mean the best mayor. People are great over there but hurry up tourism is arriving.
