Dresden’s Frauenkirche
written by annegreat on January 28th, 2009 , 3 submissions (1 vote)

For the people of Dresden the Frauenkirche is at once a memorial for future generations never let happen again things like World War II and a symbol for the reunification of Germany.

This church was destroyed and nearly burnt down at the end of World War II. The ruins had remained at their place for several years in order to function as a memorial according to the government of the German Democratic Republic.
After the two parts of Germany were reunified the reconstruction began. It was mainly paid by private donations.

The dark stones in the wall you can see on the photos in the newly built building were part of the old church. In addition there is a bigger part of the burnt facade of the original church next to the new one.

When you enter the church your are in the middle of a huge rotunda. Look up at the ceiling and you are going to get a stunning view. It is possible to step up to the top of the building and to enjoy the view over Dresden (an elevator helps). But you can also visit the underground. There is another sanctuary as well as an exhibition about the history of the building.

Besides the character of the Frauenkirche as architectural hot spot it also offers a wonderful occasion for tourist-spotting.

The church is so big that it dominates the skyline of Dresden. You can’t miss it.
