Jaisalmer and The Desert Wind Turbines

Jaisalmer is the closest city to the Pakistani border in the NW of Rajasthan, one of India’s most beautiful states. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert in the middle of nowhere. Jaisalmer is the last stop before you take your chances in the hot, windy, dry desert dunes of north India. With all kinds of merchants, vendors and markets the place city bursting with life. There is something very attractive about the chaos and bustle of Indian cities that I just can’t explain.

When I think back to this place, the one thing that always jumps back into mind are the thousands of wind turbines spread over an empty desert landscape just outside of the city. They can be seen from the city’s most famous tourist attraction, the Jaisalmer Fort, built on top of a hill in 1156. When you walk through those fields all you can hear is this alien-like resonance coming from the huge (over 30m high) three bladed wind turbines. Once on top of a very unstable tower rusted to the extent that if you move a little too much the grid beneath your feet rips into pieces, we saw a sight like no other, it was unbelievable. Anyone traveling through Rajasthan, this is an unforgettable experience!

Try to avoid the camel safari’s, they are a tourist rip-off! Just get in a cab and ask him to take you to the Bada Bagh, an 18th century monument surrounded by hundreds wind turbines.
