Marajò, land of buffalos and bicycles

When I decided to come back to Brazil, I studied the geographic map and I was fascinating to discover this big island at the mouth of the Amazon and Tocantins rivers. It’s roughly the sides of the Netherlands and Switzerland, but no more than a dozen villages are scattered in Marajò.
When you arrive to Belém, take a three and a half hours boat ride and you will land in a place reach of geographic features, wild life and cultural identity. This island is another world, buffalo and bicycles are the protagonists of green streets. Half of the island is floating six months per year, with one mt and half of water on the main island’s eastern shores, where inhabitants live.
Groups of buffalo walk undisturbed through streets, football grounds everywhere. It’s a relaxing place, with very few tourists, one of the best guarana of Amazonas, with a very little restaurant called Ponto Certo when you can eat, of course, buffalo steak with beans, rice and farofa for few reais.
Soure is the main city, the streets parallel to the river are called “ruas” and those perpendicular are called “travessas”. The life is calm, the sun light and the hot beat the time. The beaches close to Soure like Praya Barra Velho, Praya de Hararuna, and Praya do Pasqueiro are wonderful, and washed by fresh and salt water. You can reach these places by bike, but pay attention to the sun.
An alluring destination to travelers who go to the extra step to delve deeper in to the essence of a place.
