The Famed Glory of Sta. Barbara

Next from my hometown is a wonderful little place called Sta. Barbara. This town is dotted with some heritage and scenic landmarks not only for the city of Iloilo but to the whole country. History of the Municipality of Santa Barbara covers four centuries that as early as 1617, the missionaries attended to the spiritual ministration of a community or "pueblo" then known as Catmon. The name was derived from a fruit –bearing tree, which served as an imposing landmark in the vicinity.

The name was derived from a fruit –bearing tree, which served as an imposing landmark in the vicinity.

The oldest golf course in Southeast Asia is in Sta. Barbara, founded during 1907 by 13 Scots who were working on the railway back then. Then stands a baroque-architectures church, built around 1845 and was completed for 33 years. It was made as a hospital during the Civil War between Philippines and Spain during the 19th century. The church actually became a landmark by 1991.

In the plaza, the first Philippine Flag was raised outside Luzon and was known as “The Cry of Sta. Barbara” on November 17,1898. In the plaza there stands the bronze-statue of Gen. Martin Delgado. He is the foremost hero of the revolution against Spain in the Visayas as the commander-in-chief of the revolutionary forces in the these region which drove out the colonizers from the Visayan Islands on November 24, 1898. Aside from the poblacion (town-center), there lies the Roman Catholic Cemetery. It is one of the oldest landmarks in the town, constructed in 1845. Its facade bears Spanish influences and is one of the strongest structure built during the Spanish time, surviving the test of earthquakes.

A few festivals in Sta. Barbara can be enjoyed by most of the tourists. Kahilwayan, one of the highlighted festival of this town, is a cultural festival in a dance-drama from which will showcase the events that led to the historic uprising of the Ilonggos against Spain to its ultimate cry of victory and freedom known to us now as the Cry of Santa Barbara.

Sta. Barbara is rich in culture, tradition and celebration one tourist couldn’t set aside. More information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Barbara,_Iloilo
