Kaifeng, now a modern city with parks, pagodas, temples and tourist attractions was founded in 4th century BC (!) and the historicans state that in 10-11 centuries it was
the biggest city in the world.

The historical sites of Kaifeng are mainly behind the ancient city walls and so the DaXiangGuo temple that was first built in 5th century and since then reconstructed
several times.

The charming part of that temple for me (except the well-known halls and the famous Avalokiteshvara statue) was the sense of humor. Following the Lonely Planet China, in the Hall of the Heavenly Kings the following is written in Chinese and regards to the Laughing Buddha: “Big belly can endure all that is hard to endure in the world” – (for me, the almost ignorant) a very rare combination of Buddhism and irony :)

Indeed, the temple is full of “happy” or funny statues, smiling monks, huge flower statues (that are permanently replacing each other) and people, trying to get every flower on the pic :) My bet is that you won’t miss it during your Kaifeng visit.
