Börkhauser Feld used to be a field, right around the corner from where I grew up. Actually, I could see it from my bedroom window. We used to play there as kids, and it looked beautiful when the whole field was bright yellow with rapeseed flowers.
However, the field was sold, and it was decided that our city needed another housing estate. Construction began in 1999 and now in late 2008 they’re about to finish the last houses.
During the construction period, I used to sneak around there a lot, basically I was curious (and to be honest also pretty sad) about what they were doing to „my“ field, but also because I like taking pictures of construction sites and the brightly coloured new houses make good motifs for lomographers anyway.
The housing estate has a main road and a couple of little dead end roads. If you look it up on a map it looks like a hand with four fingers. There are houses of various forms and sizes, but they look generally more or less all the same. There’s a playground for kids and a little shop, but that’s about it – nothing else to do (unless you’re a lomographer, otherwise grab the next bus and get out of there!).
If you look closely you can find various big steel-sculptures scattered all across the areal which were created by a local group helping teenagers prepare for jobs. Personally, I wouldn’t want to live there, and if I’m honest I still miss „my“ old field. But it is an interesting place to take pictures anyway.
