Alcantara is a strange island, it seems the time have stopped. Sometimes, some places, make you think you’re in an abandoned village, churches, houses, streets, fields, all belong to another time.
There’re a lot of ruins, walls without the building behind, a suggestive scenery. There’s a very big church, only with the front side, but you realize it when you go inside. And there’s another big church (this one has all sides still alive) you can visit inside.
And there’re beaches all around the village, of course, but we couldn’t go there, because of the rain. It was a sunny day but suddenly it started to rain… It’s a very nice place to spend a day: you can take the boat from Saõ Luis, there’re 2 kind of boat, if you take the cheaper one, the trip take more time and it could be very hard (especially for your stomach). The other boat it’s not so expensive and it takes an hour to reach Alcantara.
It seems all restaurants are very expensive (I think it’s because it’s an island), but finally we eat in little restaurant near a square, with tables in the grass and a buffalo aside, and we asked for a discount (“we’re not rich! you have to make us the right price for this food!”) and it worked!
People advice you not to go in secondary streets or to the beach, because of the thieves, but in Brazil they will always say you the same thing in every place, you have to pay attention but if you’re not alone I suggest you to go, otherwise the risk is you lost a lot of beautiful places, and it’s the worse loss!
