Marinha Grande City

Marinha Grande is my home town, it is the place where I was born and raised, its located at 8 km of the Portuguese central Atlantic coast, and in the middle of the D. Dinis King pine tree woods, Marinha Grande is also known by the capital of glass due to the fact that for many years, hand made high quality glass and crystal was (and still is) produced in Marinha Grande and exported worldwide.

The glass production is intimately connected to the story of Marinha Grande, it was its privileged location, near the sea and sand, which is one of the main components of glass that made Marinha Grande a city. Guilherme Stephens is one of the persons that contributed the most for the development of this city, he brought glass industry to Marinha Grande, he built the “tin train”, a train that used to carry the sand from the beaches and wood from the forest to the factories, it also was, for many, the only meaning of transportation to the beaches nearby, he built beautiful buildings that have inspired and marked the architecture of Marinha Grande.

This city is made of hard-working men and a lot of fight, the work in the glass industry was very hard and very dangerous, employees used to mould the melting glass with their own hands with a small wet rag. The crisis lived many years ago and poverty of the working class led the Marinha Grande locals to a rebellion, the results where many injured and dead people but it paid off and that fight gave us the rights that we have today. Marinha Grande was also known for the fight against fascism, many of the people that opposed the regime was arrested, tortured and killed but that didn’t stop Marinha Grande to fight for people rights and liberty. One of the things I like in my city is the fact that Marinha Grande is completely flat and you can go to the nearest beach by bike, traveling between the pine wood forests, or you can take a walk along the city centre, Marinha Grande always has great subjects to photograph.

Marinha Grande may not be the most beautiful city in the world but it fills me with of pride to know that this city was the home of brave hard-working people who didn’t have afraid to fight for their rights in harsh times, I cant imagine any other better place to live in, this is my city and my home and it is, for me, the best city in the whole wide world.
