Schloss Benrath is a palace with a huge park and garden areal. It’s in the south of Düsseldorf, near the Rhine. Built in the second half of the 18th century as a summer and hunting residence for the Elector Palatine Carl Theodor von der Pfalz, it replaced an old moated castle.

The palace consists of a Corps de Logis and two wings. The architectural style is late Rococo with a few early neo-classical elements thrown in.
Today it is the home of three museums: In the Corps de Logis, there is an exhibition about the history of this place and how people used to live there around the time it was built.
In the East Wing there’s the Museum of European Garden History where you can learn about landscaping and gardens in architecture as well as see artworks related to gardening.
In the West Wing there is the Museum for Natural History where you can learn about the development of the flora and fauna of this region.

The palace is surrounded by a huge park, which is divided in several areas of different gardening styles. For example there are the old kitchen gardens with herbs and vegetables, a rose garden, and generally a mix of english, french and asian garden design.
The biggest part however are the square shaped hunting grounds with tall trees and a circular place in the middle. There are little ponds, statues and new pathways to be discovered everywhere.
From the western side of the park you also have direct access to the Rhine, so if the ponds and brooks in the park aren’t enough for you, you can stroll down the riverside.

When you need a break, you can have a picnic in the park, or you can go to the Café in the old Orangery and have some delicious food there, whatever you like better.

To get there, you can take a tram to „Schloss Benrath“, or a train stopping at „Benrath Station“ and walk from there, it’s not far.

The best time to go there is spring or summer when the gardens are green and full of flowers. Also, on very hot days, the park with the tall trees is the perfect place to hide away from the heat and direct sunlight.
Winter might be interesting too – when I was little we would go ice skating on the Mirror Pond. I don’t know if this is still allowed, but then our winters aren’t cold enough anymore for the pond to freeze over anyway…
