Cold Sunny Day At Mount Junior!
written by ethermoon on December 12th, 2008 (0 votes)

This happened during the semestral break here in our country. Semestral break may range from 2-3 weeks and having such a boring place, my friend asked me if we could go over Mount Junior in Guimaras Island. I asked him why the name. He told me that long ago, the property of the whole mountain was of his grandfather. Since time immemorial, trespassers would go inside the perimeter and build houses or resting places. It was then during his father’s time they again claimed the area and to avoid confusion, it was supposed to be named after his grandfather but since it was his father that claimed, it was named Mount Junior.

Mount Junior is not very far from my place. First, we have to ride a taxi or a jeepney straight down the Parola where the pump-boats are waiting. Fare for the pump-boat is Php 15.00 ($0.40 USD) and the tricycle fair from the shore of Guimaras Island (Buenavista) to Mount Junior is also Php 15.00. What excited me about the place is, it is a sort-of-long climb! From the foot of the mountain up to the tip is exactly 30 minutes. The uphill is very slimy, but you won’t sweat since in the middle part of your climb, you can feel the cold breeze of air even if it is sunny!

Sunny you mean? It’s perfect to shoot pictures without getting sweat! I brought my Fisheye2 with me and took some shots along the way. I was expecting for a little hut waiting for us in the tip of the mountain but there was not. Only we can see parts of the Guimaras island and the city across it.

Since it is already a developed place, we didn’t went down the mountain with the same route. There is this little, sneaky way that reaches to a school, where we had our “break” in the house of my friend. Then going down again would take 5-10 minutes riding a tricycle.

It was perhaps one of my great experience, and it was my girlfriend’s first time to go to Guimaras Island and climb Mt. Junior. Indeed, it’s always a perfect place to hang-out in the top of the mountain, viewing the marvelous sea. Although sunny, you’ll only feel a fuzzy cold breeze over there.
