One of the best ways to enjoy a romantic night at the ‘City of Smiles’ is to enjoy a sumptuous Thai dinner aboard a ferry that cruises up and down the Chao Phraya River, offering amazing views of brightly-lit establishments and landmarks. Called the “River of Kings”, Bangkok’s major river gracefully snakes through this vibrant capital, and at night, becomes a shimmering jewel, reflecting the thousands of city lights that burn along its banks.
As you enjoy the savory meat, seafood and fresh fruit (my favorite was the coconut milk ice cream), one can relish the city lights of waterside restaurants, luxury hotels like the Shangri-la and Oriental Hotels, graceful Portuguese churches and magnificent temples like Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew, as well as beautiful bridges like the cabled Rama VIII Bridge.
Dinner cruises are THB 1,500-2,500 per person. The best time to take the dinner cruise is during the month of November when the rains waft away and the cool season sets in. Many hotels can arrange river cruises for their guests. I recommend that you take with you a camera with manual exposure settings, and loaded with some ISO 400 or 800 film to soak up quickly all those delicious gems of light.
