If you are interested in modern architecture, the Medienhafen („Media harbour“) in Düsseldorf is the place to go.
Düsseldorf Hafen used to be just a normal inland port. But with the bigger port in Neuss right on the other side of the Rhine, it became clear in the mid-1970s that things needed to be changed.
Subsequently, old storage houses were converted into offices and – more importantly – new houses were built. The Hafen area now presents a wide variety of very unique modern buildings, designed by some of the most famous comtemporary architects from all over the world.
If you made me chose, my favourites would be the three buildings by Frank O. Gehry, the „Colorium“, which is one of the highest buildings, and „Roggendorf-Haus“, which is covered all over with colourful figures known as „Flossis“. But it’s difficult, there are so many buildings and they are all unique in their own way.
The majority of the buildings is used as offices, and there are a couple of galleries and designer showrooms and a few shops. There are also a couple of cafes, bars and (fancy) restaurants, clubs and a multiplex cinema, so if you need a break from running around and taking pictures, you should find a nice place to rest. And if the weather is nice, you could always just sit by the riverside and watch the ships go by.
To get there from the Old Town, you can easily walk along the Rhine, it’s about 1 km. Just walk towards the TV Tower. You can also take a tram or bus to „Polizeipräsidium“, „Stadttor“ or „Franziusstraße“.
