Cologne without the Kölner Dom? That’s unthinkable. The official name is “Hohe Domkirche St. Peter and Maria” but who cares, it’s the Kölner Dom. The Dom is 157,38m, the third highest church on earth. The cathedral is only 250 meters away from the Rhein. The architectural style is Gothic. From 1880 to 1884 the Kölner Dom was the highest building in the world and it’s the most popular sight in Germany. Since 1996 the cathedral is a world cultural heritage.
If you want to go up to the pinnacle you have to climb 509 steps.

In World War 2 many buildings of Cologne were destroyed, also the surrounding area of the Kölner Dom. Since 1968 there is the “Domplatte” around the Dom, a very ugly concrete ground, but the Dom is still as beautiful as before.

In fact that the Rhein is nearby and that there is a big bridge you can make pictures in front of the Dom, but also across the river. There are also some nice statues around and two museums. Every winter a Christmas marks is build up at the Roncalliplatz at the Dom. It’s nice but overcrowded. I prefer walking over the market before the opening day. I drink my hot spiced wine elsewhere.

So if your in Cologne you have to see the Dom. Climb up the pinnacle to have a beautiful view over cologne or only look at the wonderful old Gothic architectural style. I love Cologne and of course I love the Kölner Dom. Although my origins are in Bavarian and i recently went to Cologne (2 years ago), every time i see the Kölne Dom, I know that i am at home.
