My last visit to Penang Island, the last destination of the trip was headed to St. Anne Church. The church located at Batu Kawan, Bukit Mertajam.
It was the very first Catholic church in Bukit Mertajam, a small chapel, was built on top of the hill, some time between 1840 and 1860. Today, the site of that small chapel is the 15th and final station of the Cross which devotees make in their pilgrimage.
St Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin, was the grandmother of Jesus. In popular Catholic tradition she has been revered as the “Grandmother of God” and therefore has a place next to Mary as the most venerated saint in Catholic history. St. Anne’s Church was a nice place for people to pray. The newly installed statues were really nice!! The place has a comfortable church which can accommodate at least 1,200 people. St.Anne Church was indeed a very beautiful place. Holy, peaceful place.
