Metallist Kharkov - The real deal
written by wil6ka on November 19th, 2008 , one comment (0 votes)

This was an endeavor of the spontaneous kind, and it was beautiful. Recently I worked Kharkov, the second biggest city in the Ukraine, for to weeks and on a Thursday I was checking the live-results of the German football teams in the UEFA Cup.

Then my friend came home and asked me what I am doing. With my answer in the ear he asked himself, if that UEFA-Cup-thing, might be the same thing that will happen today in Charkow? I stumbled and asked: “What? Tiny, unknown Kharkov is in the UEFA-Cup? How much time do we have left – Where is the stadium? – Do I have to wear Long-Johns?” So we packed our stuff and we had twenty minutes to get to the Home of Metallist Kharkov. They take on the mighty Besiktas Istanbul from Turkey and when we arrived the ticket-booth was already closed. On the black market we got two tickets for 20 euros and for another twenty we had ours scarfs. The noise of the local supporters lifted us into the quite old football-temple. Getting in the stands was quite quick, rather time-consuming was finding our seats, because the fans were all excited and the crowd massive. We conquered some free seats and bumm – the first goal for the yellow-blues hit the turks. People are shouting, jumping, waving flags. Yes! Right decision.

I am looking around – little kids in oversize jersey are accompanied by grumpy old grandpas. Looking up on the green – bumm – second goal – for Metallist: I am jumping and releasing the shutter of my LC-A+. The underdog is kicking a fantastic ball – everything looks so smooth and elegant. Hence Metallist lost the first leg of the first round of the competition in Istanbul with 0:1, they are now leading in the overall result.

Half-time – we better stay at our seats and witness a massive Drum-Orchestra bringing us in the mood for the second half-time. Little side note: It is so warm, that I actually don’t need my Long-Johns. And the yellow scarfs makes me feel like a boiled egg, too. The whistle of the referee opens the second half and I learn the cheers of my new favorite team by heart: “Metallist wperjod sa pobjedy!” and “ Jscholtui-sinuije, samuije silnuije”, I am one of them – I am a winner! There is no better place right now – than right here – right now!
Bumm – third goal for us, bumm, bumm – fourth! The legendary Turkish team is going under, no chance: ”Metallist – perwaja ctoliza!”.
Overtime, Besiktas is hitting back – 1:4. Is the win in jeopardy? No! We take the victory. The whole city is bursting in euphoria. The cars are pushing the horn all the time and the next day everybody talks about it. I put my new scarf on and pretty girls look at me with a sparkle in their eyes. Yes, I like it;)
