The Commerce Square, also known as Palace Square, is one of the most majestic squares of Lisbon. This is where the royal palace stood for over two centuries until 1755, when its was destroyed by the Great Earthquake.
After this episode it was totally remodeled by Marquis of Pombal, the King’s prime minister, and transformed into the main maritime entrance to Lisbon. The north side of the square is dominated by an impressive 19th-century triumphal arch that leads to Rua Augusta and at the centre stands the bronze statue of King José I on his horse, symbolically crushing snakes on his path. The spacious arcade buildings extended around three sides of the square are now occupied by government administrative offices and some restaurants. Due to its size this place is frequently used to hold several social events such as art exhibitions, concerts or manifestations. A place you can’t miss!
